ON-SITE COMPETITION

The America’s Best Espresso Competition venue will provide competing roasters with a choice of four espresso machines and two espresso grinders. A Nuova Simonelli Aurellia II T3, a Wega Concept Green Line, a Rancilio XCELSIUS, and the Slayer Espresso Machine will be available as well as both an Anfim and MAHLKÖNIG espresso grinder. Competing roasters are welcome to bring their own espresso grinder of their choosing.

Once seeded within the tournament each roaster will know its Friday, opening round competition time. Each roaster will send their coffee and a Barista to pull a shot on one of the four espresso machines at the competition venue. Competitors will go head to head in a winner move on, loser go home tournament competition. The competition will continue in this fashion all the way down to the sweet 16 on Saturday and then the final four and championship final Sunday.

Baristas will have six minutes on Friday and ten minutes on Saturday and Sunday to prepare one espresso that will be submitted to the judging table of three carefully selected judges. Judges will be chosen from the field of Baristas competing in the Latte Art World Championship Open. Judges will evaluate the shots of espresso from each competitor in the categories of:
1) Flavor Complexity
2) Mouthfeel & Appeal
3) Aftertaste

The competition is designed to evaluate a roaster's coffee and in particular the roaster's espresso blend.
