Jargon Can Kill Your Margins: A Guide to Approachable Excellence

October 17, 2026

Business Operations

As a Q Grader and Roaster, I live and breathe the technical side of coffee. However, I've learned customers don’t care about refractometers or anaerobic fermentation if they feel stupid asking about them. Many shops spend their energy fighting over the top 1% of coffee nerds, completely ignoring the 99% who just want a tasty morning cup.

This session is about the art of translation—turning high-level coffee science into flavors and stories that everyday people actually want to buy. We will explore the "Middle Ground" strategy: how to maintain high-end standards while remaining approachable and friendly.

Specialty coffee doesn’t have to be a secret club. Instead of gatekeeping the "perfect" cup, let's discuss how to welcome everyone into the world of specialty coffee. We can work together to pave the way for approachable specialty coffee by making specialty coffee fun, accessible, and enjoyable for all.
