Hands-on Barista Training: Espresso Extraction Foundations

BTW02NY
March 10, 2026
Latte Art Venue

New to espresso or still building your confidence on bar? This hands-on, small-group workshop will walk you through the essential steps of dialing in for a balanced, flavorful shot. Designed for beginner to early-intermediate baristas, this session builds core skills through a mix of lecture, demonstration, and guided practice.

Topics Covered:

  • Understanding key variables: grind size, dose, yield, and time
  • Tamping techniques for consistency
  • Intro to the dialing-in process and basic espresso recipe building
  • Identifying under-extracted and over-extracted shots
  • Tasting and calibrating with confidence

While focusing on foundational techniques, this session will also touch on how to adjust for different roast profiles, ensuring consistently high-quality results across a range of coffees. Participants will learn to taste and calibrate each shot, identifying signs of under-extraction and over-extraction, and will leave confident in making necessary adjustments to achieve balanced, flavorful espresso.

In this workshop, the barista will have some time to work with the machine and receive hands on coaching. Some of these topics will be covered in theory and demonstration only. This workshop is a mixture of lecture and hands on training.

We offer our Barista Skills training in two flexible formats:

  • Espresso & Milk Foundations: One 3-hour combined session
  • Espresso Extraction Foundations (this class) + Latte Art Foundations: Two separate shorter workshops covering the same material
